I actually served in the Navy with the guy that the Drow elves were named after. He used to play with Gary Gygax back in the day, and was a big part of creating that race.
Don’t believe WotC. The race of Drow has been around a lot longer than most of the people there have been alive. It is pronounced to rhyme with crow.
I intentionally avoid revealing which way Jim says it and which way Gil says it. When I started gaming 20+ years ago we said the crow rhyme version. We had never heard anyone say it any other way. When we finally heard it pronounced the other way, it made us question which was correct. According to Wizards of the Coast, you are correct– but the word originates from the Icelandic word “trow” meaning troll. I sense this conflict escalating in issue 5.
